Keep that New Year’s Resolution to Exercise, Plan to Participate in This Fun-Filled Basketball Event for a Truly Worthwhile Cause
The Fox Valley Marines Detachment #1233 annual Hoops for the Troops is a highly successful basketball event resulting from tremendous advance planning and effort. Each year, this program is spearheaded by the energetic Sarah Rashkow with her husband, Steve, Judge Advocate of the Fox Valley Marines group.
Tremendous legwork, phone solicitations and volunteer recruiting have resulted in the event with raffle prizes raising some $10,000 each of two successive years to support various veteran-related charities selected by Fox Valley Marines: Friends of fisher House-Illinois, Hope for Tomorrow, Operation Welcome You Home, Illinois, Inc., and a portion retained by Fox Valley Marines to help military and women.
The 2013 tournament at the Vaughn Athletic Center in Aurora included 12 teams: AMVETS Post #0103, Aurora Fire Department, the Police Departments of Aurora, Montgomery, Naperville and Oswego, the Sheriff’s Departments of DuPage, Kane and Kendall County, U.S. Army Recruiters, Home Depot and the 2nd Battalion 24th Marine Regiment.
A complimentary and supervised children’s play area is also provided. Parents can bring their children to the area directly across from the gym and proceed to enjoy the games.
So, if you want to attend some competitive and usually quite physical, exciting basketball games and contribute to a very worthy charity, please mark your calendars now.
